2024 November Laura Kuhlman

Hello friends…PRS is hosting its third playing session of our 2024/25 season. Our September and October session have been loads of fun and a lot of great music has been presented. On behalf of the Board, I invite you to attend our November session on Sunday, November 10 at St. David of Wales, 2800 SE Harrison, Portland. We will be meeting from 2:00 – 4:00pm.

Since I am in the middle of rather big move and all my music is packed away, I have decided to look through computer files and have found some gems that will provide us with an afternoon of musical discovery. Some of the music will be easy and others will give us something to sink our teeth into.

We will begin with another reading of card #3 from the Flötner playing cards. We had a lot of fun reading those in September and it will provide us with a nice warm up.

Next up will be a work by Flemish composer, Philippe de Monte (1521-1603), “La grand’ amour” Going back in time by just a bit, we will play the chanson, “Il est bel et bon” by the French composer, Pierre Passereau (c.1485 – 1547). A prolific composer of chansons, Passereau’s chansons are mostly light-hearted affairs.

Right up there with Passerea is another famous chanson composer, Claudin de Sermisy (c1490 – 1562). Although it has never been fully confirmed that Sermisy may have studied with Josquin, he did study the great master’ works and wrote beautiful sacred music. Sermisy’s lovely, “Allez souspirs” will not disappoint. Finishing our session, we will delve into movie theme music from the 1963 Japanese film, “Shitamachi no Taiyo” by Kôji Eguchi and arranged for recorders by Fumihiko Yamada. It is yet another gem to be discovered together.

So, it looks like a full plate of entertainment! I look forward to sharing this all with you. Bring your recorders, your violins, your viola da gambas or anything you might want to play. Let me know if you have any questions about the music or the session. There is plenty pf parking at St David of Wales. Find the red doors on the parking lot side of the church and follow the sounds of recorders! See you on Sunday, November 10, 2024 from 2:00 – 4:00 pm. Doors open at 1:45.

All the best, Laura
