Born out of the need to connect his people to the miracles of the Virgin Mary, Alphonso X, King of Castile (1252 -1284), wrote and composed over 400 poems with music in the Galician-Portugese language. Our concert will explore these melodies and augment the program with similar songs used throughout the centuries for pilgrimages and storytelling.

Musica Universalis welcomes again, the dynamic recorder virtuoso, Clêa Galhano. A passionate Brazilian musician that brings energy and enthusiasm to any musical setting.

Joining us for the first time for a full concert, Portland based soprano and arts activist, Madeline Ross, will delight the audience with her magical and soulful touch to these beautiful melodies.

Of course, leading the way will be Musica Universalis with our rich depth of historical instrumentation, turning tunes on their ear and getting the audience involved in one way or the other. One will hear and see a cymbalom, violin, vielle, viola da gamba, bagpipes, recorders, crumhorns and load of percussion filling the space with their spirited flair.
